Celebrating Black Heroes of Chinatown
For Black History Month, we created a project "Celebrating Black Heroes of Chinatown", which involved a poster campaign and a celebration event. We interviewed our black heroes and shared their interviews through bilingual posters that we exhibited across Chinatown in places such as the Chinatown Library, Haines Elementary, Chinese American Service League, Chiu Quon Bakery, Archer Courts Housing, and more.
TACC is creating a poster series to promote successful black community members in Chinatown. The posters will be recognition pieces that include accomplishment highlights and involvement in the Chinatown community. They will be posted in February for Black History Month at various locations throughout Chinatown.
Let's Talk about Growing Anti-Chinese Sentiment During the Time of the Coronavirus
This is a part of our series called "Let's Talk" where we have discussions about community concerns, life experiences, and other issues that affect groups of color.
This event was created for people who have experienced and/or witnessed anti-Chinese sentiment during the time of the coronavirus and would like to talk about it. We had 22 people meet online from all backgrounds to discuss concerns and the impact the coronavirus has had on Chinese residents.
Stop the Hate. Stop the Crime. Campaign
We believe that it is a crime that the most marginalized groups in America are affected by the failure of the healthcare systems and the lack of care from policies that were supposed to protect them.
For the full month of April of 2020 we created a campaign to call attention to the increase of violence towards East Asian Americans due to the growing fear in the U.S. pertaining to the Coronavirus. We hosted a phone banking event towards the end of the month where for an hour we called and tweeted the Governor of Illinois as well as the mayor of Chicago to create temporary policies that protect East Asians after the Stay at Home Order is over.
In addition, to this campaign we hosted a phone banking event to ask the Governor to protect, provide better healthcare, and support to Black American communities during the time of COVID-19.
